The Bears season continues to inflate with more drama surrounding Shane Waldron, and current quarterback Caleb Williams

The Chicago Bears fired Shane Waldron on Tuesday and since then, the rumor train is in full operation. According to Marc Silverman, a longtime Chicago sports radio host, he dropped some intriguing information about the state of the organization.

“After talking to a few people with knowledge of the situation, players went to Matt Eberflus & Ryan Poles asking them to make a change at offensive coordinator. There have also been a few veteran players requesting (Tyson) Bagent starts.” Rumors had circled for the past few weeks due to the disappointing performance.

After starting the season 4-2, they dropped their last three games. In the latter two games, no offensive touchdowns were scored. Those games were also against the Arizona Cardinals and the New England Patriots. Chicago has struggled offensively throughout the season. For instance, they have the third-fewest total offensive yards per game in the league. Only the Patriots and Cleveland Browns have fewer.

Williams himself hasn’t been overly impressive, considering he came in as the No. 1 pick. On the year, he has 1,785 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and five interceptions. The numbers aren’t bad but considering the weapons around him makes these underwhelming.

Why did the Bears players want Shane Waldron fired and Caleb Williams benched?

In the rumor, players said that they wanted to see the backup quarterback, Tyson Bagent start. When Justin Fields went down with an injury last season, he showed some promise. Bagent capitalized on the deep ball, as well as intermediate routes. He also was a successful rusher, taking pressure off of the running game. Still, he made mistakes, throwing wonky interceptions throughout his five games last season.

While Williams’s numbers have been better, Bagent understands the system and has a year of experience under his belt. Also, with weapons like Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze, and DJ Moore, there’s more safety to throw the ball to.

For Waldron, his play calling wasn’t the best, to say the least. In the last two games, the offense didn’t score a touchdown. Despite Eberflus’s confidence in the former Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator, players didn’t feel the same way. After a career year with Justin Fields under center, Moore hasn’t replicated that same production with Williams. He only has 40 receptions for 398 yards and three touchdowns. Also, Moore questioned if Eberflus lost his team in the locker room.

Regardless, there’s plenty of blame to go around for the Bears. From an inconsistent game plan to throwing their franchise quarterback in the fire, Chicago isn’t looking too pretty. Hopefully, interim offensive coordinator Thomas Brown can spark some life into an underwhelming season.
