Kim Kardashian has been called out for “ruining” Janet Jackson’s outfit from a music video in the 90s after the reality star donned the exact outfit worn by the pop star.
The SKIMS founder, 43, could be seen in an Instagram snap on Tuesday donning the exact iconic waistcoat previously worn by Janet Jackson for a music video. The snap was shared this week before she attended Janet’s gig with mom Kris Jenner and sister Khloe Kardashian.
Kim could be seen rocking the black cropped waistcoat which had intricate detailing on the front in a white material. The reality star teamed the waistcoat with some black flared trousers that had a retro lace-up detailing on the waist.
The outfit was made famous in 1993 for Janet’s music video for the single, If. The iconic look was then sold in 2021 for $25,000, with it being flogged at an auction after it was listed in the Iconic Treasures from the Legendary Career and Life of Janet Jackson auction.
Kim seemingly got her hands on the outfit and wore it to the recent gig, with fans and critics quick to pass comment. Captioning the snap on her Instagram stories with: “For Janet Jackson’s birthday because I’m such a fan. I can’t believe I won this outfit.”
Reddit users were then quick to weigh in, with one writing: “Kim is not happy unless she’s ruining iconic outfits.”
Another then added: “She has millions of dollars. She could easy buy cases for these outfits and have them displayed in her home.
“Instead she’s wearing them and ruining them. Like why not get someone to replicate the outfits so the iconic ones don’t get destroyed. Not like she can’t afford it,” a second said.
“What is her obsession with wearing the clothes of iconic women? It only makes her look even more unoriginal,” a third added.
Kim famously wore a vintage Bob Mackie dress once owned by Marilyn Monroe to the Met Gala 2022. Marilyn wore the glittering frock to sing Happy Birthday to president John F Kennedy in May 1962.
When Kim wore the frock, she sparked outrage. At the time it was claimed that it had been “permantely altered”, although a US museum has denied claims that the gown was left damaged.
