Jennifer Garner might be one of the most recognizable people on the planet, but back home in Charleston, West Virginia, she’s just another friendly face.

During a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Garner reacted to a video of herself at her nephew’s soccer game in West Virginia. Despite being admittedly “clueless” about the game, the actress is the only fan yelling from the stands.

When the camera turns to her in the clip, Garner can be seen covering her mouth like she’s shocked to find herself yelling so loudly. The mother of three explained that she’s become more interested in soccer since she became an investor in the National Women’s Soccer League team, Angel City FC, even though she doesn’t understand the intricacies of the sport.

“I’m yelling like I suddenly know what’s happening just because I’m an investor in Angel City,” she told Clarkson. “When I go to Angel City, I am clueless, I know I’m clueless, I just am smiling, having a good time.”

“But as soon as I’m out, and I’m at my nephew’s game in West Virginia, I’m suddenly an expert,” Garner added. “Yelling things… ‘Hey ref, that’s a yellow card!’ I don’t know what a yellow card is!”

When Clarkson suggested that other people at the game must be surprised to see Garner getting rowdy in the stands, the A-lister said that shouldn’t be further from the truth.

“I grew up with everybody at the game,” she said. “That’s my high school, that’s my sister, that’s my town. They’ve all known me—they are not impressed.”

Garner, who graduated from George Washington High School in 1990, has always been proud of her West Virginia roots and the tight-knit community she grew up in. In fact, she told Southern Living that she wouldn’t trade growing up there for anything in the world.

“I feel so fortunate to have grown up in a place where people look out for each other,” she said. “Community is the one thing people crave most, and it’s hard to come by. I grew up with such an excess of it that now wherever I go, the first thing I do is build my group.”

“I’m happy to be anywhere in the state,” Garner shared. “There is nothing better.”
